Mountain safety

Check the mountain weather forecast and avalanche bulletins in winter, start hikes early in summer to avoid storms, carry water, layers and a map, and never cross snowfields without the right equipment. Tap water is safe to drink; don't drink untreated stream water near grazing animals.

Etiquette

Say "bonjour" or "hola" when entering shops. In Spain, expect late meal times. Close gates behind you on pastures, and keep dogs under control near flocks and guard dogs.
