The Alps have the giant interlinked circuits, but the Pyrenees have their own appeal: lower prices, sunny slopes, Spanish food and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Size

The largest Alpine areas offer 500 km or more of linked slopes. In the Pyrenees, the biggest are around 150 to 200 km, like Grandvalira and Baqueira. That's plenty for a week for most skiers.

Snow

The Pyrenees are lower and further south, so snow can be less consistent, especially in the east and at lower resorts. The higher, north-facing and Atlantic-influenced resorts like Baqueira and the Grand Tourmalet tend to fare best, and snow-making is widespread. January to March is the safest window.

Price

Lift passes, ski schools and accommodation are usually cheaper than in the big-name Alpine resorts. Andorra in particular is known for value packages.

Atmosphere and food

Long Spanish lunches, late dinners, tapas and cava, or French garbure and local cheese: the Pyrenees feel more local and less international.

Getting there

Flights to Toulouse, Barcelona, Biarritz, Pau or Lourdes; transfers are mostly 1 h 30 to 3 h. Alpine resorts near Geneva can be quicker to reach.

Verdict

Choose the Alps for maximum mileage and snow certainty. Choose the Pyrenees for value, sunshine, families, intermediates and a holiday that feels more Spanish or southern French.
