Hidden in forests south of Jaca, the old monastery of San Juan de la Peña is built right under a massive overhanging cliff. It was one of the most important monasteries of the early Kingdom of Aragón, and the burial place of its first kings.
What to see
- The Romanesque cloister, with carved capitals telling Bible stories, sheltered by the rock.
- The Mozarabic lower church and the royal pantheon.
- The 17th-century new monastery on the plateau above, with an interpretation centre.
The Holy Grail
According to tradition, a chalice believed to be the Holy Grail was kept here in the Middle Ages before it was moved to Valencia Cathedral, where it is displayed today.
Tips
A shuttle may run between the new and old monasteries in season. Check opening times, which vary through the year.
